Robots shouldn’t have to be designed around whatever wheels happen to exist in a catalog.

Ten years ago, Gabe ran into exactly that problem while building a home robot called Jerry. The robot needed a 6.35-inch wheel with a specific width, mounting pattern, hub interface, and tread. Standard wheels didn’t fit, machining was too expensive, molding added tooling and supply-chain complexity, and 3D printing wasn’t scalable enough yet.

Today, that problem looks completely different.

Modern production 3D printing makes it possible to manufacture custom wheels, rollers, casters, and other hardware without buying molds or carrying huge inventories. Instead of designing a robot around a standard wheel, you can define the wheel around the robot.

We also built Wheel Maker to make that process even simpler: choose the dimensions, mounting style, bore, bearings, and other requirements, then manufacture exactly what the machine needs.

This is a simple wheel—but it demonstrates a much bigger shift in hardware manufacturing: infinite selection, zero inventory, and faster product iteration.
